    Designing a Web Application for Simple and Collaborative Video Annotation That Meets Teaching Routines and Educational Requirements

    Video annotation and analysis is an important activity for teaching with and about audiovisual media artifacts because it helps students to learn how to identify textual and formal connections in media products. But school teachers lack adequate tools for video annotation and analysis in media education that are easy-to-use, integrate into established teaching organization, and support quick collaborative work. To address these challenges, we followed a design-based research approach and conducted qualitative interviews with teachers to develop TRAVIS GO, a web application for simple and collaborative video annotation. TRAVIS GO allows for quick and easy use within established teaching settings. The web application provides basic analytical features in an adaptable work space. Key didactic features include tagging and commenting on posts, sharing and exporting projects, and working in live collaboration. Teachers can create assignments according to grade level, learning subject, and class size. Our work contributes further insights for the CSCW community about how to implement user demands into developing educational tools

    How TikTok served as a platform for young people to share and cope with lived COVID-19 experiences

    The short-video app TikTok saw a large increase in usage during the COVID-19 lockdown because it provided entertainment, distraction, and social interaction based on video content engagement. We present results from an interview study with 28 U.S. TikTok users on how they shared and engaged with lived pandemic experiences on TikTok to cope with and socialize after the U.S. imposed its first lockdown. Participants had already established TikTok as a peer community platform on which sharing lived experiences felt appropriate. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, participants started to look for TikTok videos of shared lived pandemic experiences to interact with others when physical interaction was made impossible. We find that TikTok videos facilitated communication and parasocial interaction based on known audiovisual styles. Participants were able to communicate through video creation based on shared ways of presenting short-video content during COVID-19 physical distancing

    Historical significance and taxonomic status of Ischyrodon meriani (Pliosauridae) from the Middle Jurassic of Switzerland

    Ischyrodon meriani is an obscure pliosaurid taxon established upon an exceptionally large tooth crown of a probable Callovian (Middle Jurassic) age that originates from Wölflinswil, Canton of Aargau, Switzerland. Despite being known for almost two centuries, the specimen remains poorly researched. Historically, I. meriani has been associated, or even considered conspecific, with Pliosaurus macromerus and Liopleurodon ferox. However, neither of the two hypotheses have been tested through detailed comparisons or using modern quantitative methods. Here, we redescribe the type of Ischyrodon meriani, illustrate it, and compare to teeth of thalassophonean pliosaurids, with special focus on Jurassic representatives of the clade. Multivariate analyses show close similarities to L. ferox but comparable structures to those of I. meriani, including a distinctive pattern of the apicobasal ridges, are also observable in some mid-Cretaceous brachauchenines from the ‘Polyptychodon’ assemblage of East and South East England. While it is likely that I. meriani represents a Liopleurodon-like taxon, or is indeed conspecific with L. ferox, which would make I. meriani the proper name for the species, any such taxonomic considerations are hindered by the fragmentary nature of the type specimens of both these taxa as well as limited knowledge of the dental variability within and between individual jaws of L. ferox. Currently, I. meriani is best treated as a nomen dubium. Finally, we discuss the potential implications of I. meriani being conspecific with L. ferox, and additionally provide a commentary on the taxonomic status of Liopleurodon

Economia.O presente trabalho de conclusão de curso discute a questão agrária no Brasil e Santa Catarina, através da história do país e da unidade federativa. Há uso de dados provenientes de bancos de dados oficiais, que foram tratados estatisticamente para analisar como se deu o processo de obtenção de propriedade agrícola no estado de Santa Catarina, especificamente por meio de programas de políticas públicas na década de 1980. Esses programas deram oportunidade de acesso à propriedades rurais a várias pessoas. Houve iniciativas de assentamentos do Incra, efetuando-se a reforma agrária tradicional. Soma-se a isso, o Fundo de Terras do Estado de Santa Catarina, o Banco da Terra (já extinto) e o Programa Nacional de Crédito Fundiário, os quais realizam a reforma agrária de mercado, pois o acesso à terra dá-se através de crédito financeiro para a compra da propriedade. Num primeiro momento, as políticas do Incra e do Fundo de Terras funcionaram concomitantemente. O programa do Incra foi o que beneficiou a maior quantidade de famílias, porém com a criação do Banco da Terra e a nacionalização da política de acesso a terra mediante crédito, reverte-se o processo, de modo que mais pessoas passaram a utilizar-se do crédito agrário na totalidade de beneficiados pelos programas. Tal quadro prosseguiu mesmo após a extinção do Banco da Terra e sua substituição pelo Programa Nacional de Crédito Fundiário, o qual deveria ser uma política complementar à reforma agrária, tornando-se na verdade, o principal modo de acesso à terras agrícolas em Santa Catarina

    Ammonoid soft tissue remains revealed by computed tomography

    Findings of ammonoid soft tissues are extremely rare compared to the rich fossil record of ammonoid conchs ranging from the Late Devonian to the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. Here, we apply the computed-tomography approach to detect ammonoid soft tissue remains in well-preserved fossils from the Early Cretaceous (early Albian) of NE-Germany of Proleymeriella. The ammonites were found in glauconitic–phosphatic sandstone boulders. Analyses of the high-resolution Ct-data revealed the presence of cameral sheets, the siphuncular tube wall, and the siphuncle itself. The siphuncle is a long, segmented soft tissue that begins at the rear end of the body chamber and comprises blood vessels. Chemical analyses using energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) showed that all preserved soft tissues were phosphatized and are now composed of fluorapatite. The same holds true for preserved shell remains that locally show the nacreous microstructure.
